Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin said on Oct. 28 that the BRICS summit "revived hope," bringing together representatives of free nations.

"BRICS is a gathering of free countries and free people. It is not formed based on the proximity of borders like the European Union, but rather on shared values, which is something Serbia wants to be a part of," Vulin said in an interview with the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS).

Vulin said that he was among friends in Russia and that Russian President Vladimir Putin understood Serbia's position and appreciated the courage needed to refuse to impose sanctions upon Russia.

"I spoke with Putin about the global situation and how we can improve our relations. Serbia is  the only country in Europe that has not imposed sanctions against Russia. Putin values that highly. Serbia is surrounded by NATO member states, and it’s not an easy position," Vulin noted.

The Serbian official also said that the BRICS countries did not impose any conditions on Serbia and that, thanks to Russia, there would be enough gas for Serbia this winter.
