Vucic: Path to EU, Commitment to European Serbia Key to Country’s Progress

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Oct. 25 that the path to the European Union and commitment to a European Serbia were of vital importance to the country’s progress.

After a meeting in Belgrade with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Vucic said that as long as he was president, Serbia would not change the goals of its foreign and interior policies.

“That means that our European path, and our commitment to a European Serbia, are of vital importance to the country’s progress. However differently others may think, I am the president of the Republic, with the highest legitimacy, elected twice by citizens in the first round of elections, and as long as I am the president, the chief goals of our foreign and interior policies will not be changed,” Vucic said.

The Serbian president said the talks with the EC president were “very long, open and sincere.” “There are things that the EU criticizes Serbia for, but the president of the European Commission has always been prepared to hear our side, too. We discussed the geopolitical situation, and I informed her on Serbia’s policies, including respect for the U.N. Charter and international public and legal system, as well as that the Ukrainian authorities have accredited our ambassador for opening an embassy in Kyiv, and I believe that Marko Djuric will soon attend the ceremony in the Ukrainian capital,” Vucic said.
