Serbia’s renowned lawyer Borivoje Borovic said on Nov. 8 that an investigation into the tragedy in Novi Sad would never be fully completed, because it was Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic who had guaranteed that the new railway station was safe.
Borovic said for BETA that the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Vojvodina’s capital should have requested the arrest of persons directly involved in the reconstruction of the train station and the concrete canopy.
“Since it is a state-run project involving several outsiders, putting a politician on trial would unveil a case of political interference with the work of professionals. The tragedy will never be fully investigated, just like none of those that happened before. If the train station in Novi Sad was opened by President Vucic, he too was a guarantee that it was safe,” the lawyer explained.
According to Borovic, the authorities are gaging the popular mood, choosing the course of the investigation and accountability accordingly. “The public, unfortunately, usually forgets facts a month later. This is just another case of hushing up a crime that involves officials,” Borovic said.
