On Dec. 12, the Serbian Cabinet ruled that the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure must, within the next 24 hours, “make publicly available all documentation pertaining to the possible crimes resulting in the collapse of the Novi Said railway station overhang on November 1, 2024.”
The accident claimed the lives of 15 people and left two more critically injured and fighting for their lives over a month later. The station was officially re-opened in June after three years of renovations.
At the same sitting, the Cabinet decided to increase the 2025 funding of higher education institutions by 20 percent compared to 2024.
Both decisions were announced on Dec. 11 by President Aleksandar Vucic, who told the media that he has thereby met the demands of the university student strike, which has halted the operation of over 40 post-secondary schools since late November.
The blockades began after university students were subject to attacks at rallies protesting Novi Sad railway station collapse, and steadily spread to include over 40 higher education institutions in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Nis and Subotica.
