A classroom ceiling has collapsed in the village of Saranovo, near Raca in central Serbia, the detached unit of Elementary School Karadjordje, and all pupils were sent home in the morning on April 22, BETA has been told in the School office.

BETA has learned from Tomislav Veljkovic, a whistleblower from Raca, that the renovation of the school unit in Saranovo was completed four months ago.

The entire ceiling structure collapsed during the Easter break. Upon returning to school the morning on April 22, all pupils were sent home for safety reasons, while classes will be organized elsewhere.

Serbia Center party (SRCE) has said that the collapse of the ceiling in the elementary school in the municipality of Raca is “the evidence of the regime’s negligence and widespread corruption,” adding that “luckily, the entire ceiling structure collapsed during the Easter break, so no pupil was in the classroom. Otherwise it would have been a tragedy,” the party said.

The party demands that the information be made public about the contractor, supervision body and those who approved the works, as well as whether the structure has been issued an acceptance certificate. The party also asked how many more canopies and ceilings would have to collapse and how many people to die because of “the irresponsible government” and “the corrupt regime”.
