Attorneys On One-Day Strike Over State of Serbian Society

On Dec. 11, Serbia’s attorneys entered a 24-hour strike, whereby they will not be appearing in court or in dealings with public notaries or executors, aside from proceedings involving detained citizens or minors facing criminal charges.

Vladimir Terzic, a member of the Serbian Chamber of Attorneys’ steering committee, has said that the attorneys’ strike is an expression of solidarity with the public, but also “a form of revolt against the general state of society” in the country.

The decision to go on strike, passed by the Chamber’s steering committee, comes in response to the manner in which the amendments to the Criminal Code were made and adopted and the selective processing of those responsible for the Novi Sad railway station collapse and of participants in the ensuing public rallies, but also over the executive government’s interference in the operation of the judiciary, the Insider daily has reported.

Terzic went on to say that the strike sends the message that attorneys will not abide the National Assembly passing laws in the way that the amendments to the Criminal Code were recently adopted, and again underlined that the proceedings launched against the suspects in the Novi Sad tragedy and protesters in subsequent rallies were far from unbiased.
