Updated: 09/04/2025 - 11:56 GMT+2

Several buildings were destroyed after wildfires broke out on the outskirts of Chita, a city in Russia’s Far East, on Tuesday, according to the Russian Emergency Ministry.

Fueled by strong winds and dry grass, the blaze spread rapidly across an area of 1,800 hectares (4,448 acres). Around 60 firefighters were deployed to contain the flames.

Meanwhile, in the Republic of Dagestan in the North Caucasus, efforts continue to battle a separate wildfire in a remote mountainous region. More than 370 personnel, including emergency crews and volunteers, are involved in efforts to combat the blaze.

Authorities say counterfires are being used in an attempt to halt the fire’s advance and prevent further damage.
