M23 rebels launch offensive in eastern DRC, causing tension in Kinshasa

Demonstrators attacked embassies, looted shops and burned tyres in the streets of the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital protesting against an M23 rebel offensive in the east of the country.

Video footage showed the French embassy badly damaged by fire.

According to the UN and the army, 17 peacekeepers and foreign soldiers were killed in the fighting.

The Rwandan-backed M23 group has claimed control of Goma, accusing the central government of violating a peace deal.
