LGBTQ+ dating: This study ranked the best European cities for a romantic getaway

A new study on Europe's most romantic LGBTQ+ hotspots has crowned Berlin as the best destination on the continent among 40 cities.

The research ranked locations based on factors like the number of LGBTQ+ events and bars, the percentage of singles, as well as the cities' safety and anti-discrimination score.

The German capital leads the way thanks to its 14 LGBTQ+ bars listed on TripAdvisor - many of them in Berlin's rainbow district, Schöneberg - and its 15 annual events and festivals dedicated to the community.

Amsterdam comes in at number two. The Dutch capital made history back in 2001 when it became the first city to legalise gay marriage.

Today, it's home to 16 LGBTQ+ bars and a thriving social scene, with over 38% of the population being single, offering good chances to mingle, says the Compare the Market study.

In terms of safety and anti-discrimination, however, Helsinki is the best option.

The Finnish capital gained the maximum anti-discrimination rate (100) as well as a high safety score (75.4).

Two Portuguese cities, Lisbon and Porto, also obtained a 100 anti-discrimination score.

At the same time, the UK is the only country, along with Germany, to feature two cities in the top ten: London and Manchester.

Italy's Naples and Cyprus' Limassol fare second to last and last, respectively, in the general ranking.

However, according to LGBTQ+ rights online platform Equaldex, Cyprus is one of the countries in Europe that's making the most significant steps forward on LGBTQ+ legislation compared to its generally conservative public opinion.
