Serbia has three avenues for exiting its ongoing crisis and of those three, forming an interim government seems the most realistic, Dusan Spasojevic, a professor at the Belgrade University School of Political Science, said on March 6.

Speaking for the Nova daily, Spasojevic stated that the other two options are the collapse of the ruling coalition and the collapse of the university student protests – both of which he deemed less than likely.

Commenting on the recent incidents inside the Serbian National Assembly, the professor opined that the opposition’s actions embodied what part of their supporters had demanded.

According to Spasojevic, the opposition MPs have enabled the “spread of dissatisfaction within official institutions, probably earning some kind of advantage.” While their tactics – including flares and smoke bombs – also “gave the regime ample cause to lambast them,” the professor concluded such a dynamic “is par for the course” in the relationship between the regime and opposition.
