The Czech government decided on March 26 to appoint its own special envoy for the Balkans, convinced that the region needed attention, and assigned the former Czech ambassador to the European Union, Edita Hrda, to the post.

“I am pleased that Ambassador Hrda had accepted to be the government’s envoy for the Balkans. The region needs intensive diplomatic care,” Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky stated ahead of the session of the government.

Edita Hrda will perform the function within the Czech Foreign Ministry. She has been a member of the Czech diplomatic corps since 1992, the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations between 2011 and 2015, and the ambassador to the EU as of 2020.

“I am looking forward to it very much. An idea was born in Prague that we could use one of the rather successful agendas of our EU presidency and that I could focus on EU enlargement,” Hrda stated at the beginning of this year.
