A car has driven into a group of people at a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg on Friday, according to a government spokesman.
According to media reports, citing the rescue service in Magdeburg, some 60-80 people were injured in the attack. There were also reports about possible deaths, but the information is not confirmed. It is also unclear whether it was a terrorist attack.
Emergency services are reportedly searching the area for possible explosives.
The driver of the car has been arrested, according to dpa news agency, citing unidentified government officials in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Located west of Berlin, Magdeburg is the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, with a population of about 240,000.
One unconfirmed video circulating on social media shows the car plowing into the crowded market.
Another shows people lying on the ground and a massive police presence in the area. The authenticity of this video has also not been confirmed.
The premier of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff has reportedly described the attack as a “terrible event,” especially as it occurred in the days before Christmas
