Argentine unions rally in Buenos Aires ahead of nationwide strike

Updated: 10/04/2025 - 14:21 GMT+2

Argentina’s main trade union federation led mass demonstrations in Buenos Aires on Wednesday in protest against President Javier Milei’s austerity measures, ahead of a 24-hour nationwide general strike.

Union members were joined by retirees, students, political groups and football fans, demanding better pensions, improved incomes and fairer living conditions.

Retirees — hit hardest by recent cuts — renewed calls for increased benefits and access to essential medications.

The main trade union federation, the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), described the strike as a stand against "intolerable social inequality" under a government they say refuses to engage.

Thursday's walkout is expected to disrupt airports, banks, fuel stations and public services. President Milei’s government has dismissed the action, with officials questioning the unions’ legitimacy.
